Beer, Beer Review, Bone Up Brewing Company, Massachusetts, New England

Checking in with one more brew from Bone Up Brewing that I wanted to showcase this week.  This one caught my eye because it reminded me of something they released a little while back that I really enjoyed.

Beer Name: Uni-Dog

Brewery: Bone Up Brewing Company (Everett, MA)

Style: Red Ale

ABV: 4.6%

Description: Best enjoyed while “fearfully scurrying away from a cat,” this red ale was brewed with Massachusetts grown Rakau hops and named in honor of a departed Pyrenees named Domino.

Appearance: It poured to a light caramel and amber colored body topped off by a firm line of white foam.

Smell: Subdued malty sweetness.

Taste: Mild caramel and citrus sweetness upfront followed by a dry, malty finish.  There was also an underlying toastiness throughout bringing a smooth, even presence to the beer.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

Hype: Not a whole lot, though seeing this beer did remind me of how much I miss the dog-themed glass I had from them that met with an unfortunate accident.

Overall: This was a tasty, no nonsense beer that really found a way to hit the spot.  Perhaps not the flashiest of brews, it was still a nice beer to kick back and relax with.

Beer, Beer Review, Bone Up Brewing Company, Massachusetts, New England, Pride

I’m not quite sure when this happened, but somehow the calendar has flipped over into June!  June, of course, is Pride Month and when I saw that my neighbors at Bone Up were once again brewing a special beer to mark the occasion we decided to make them next on our curbside pickup list.

Beer Name: Get Proud and Get Loud

Brewery: Bone Up Brewing Company (Everett, MA)

Style: Saison

ABV: 6.0%

Description: Listed as a “hoppy Saison” brewed with Grüngeist hops.

Appearance: It poured a hazy, pale yellow body with wisps of white of white foam clinging to the edges of the glass.

Smell: Fruity sweetness atop a hint of spicy, floral yeast.

Taste: It opened with sweet fruit punch notes followed by a smooth, almost creamy run of pale malt mid-sip.  The finish featured a mild spicy/peppery yeast presence more typical of the style accompanied by similar hop profile.

Mouthfeel: Roughly medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

Hype: I was definitely looking forward to this one.  Last year’s Pride beer was very good and I had no doubt this release would be something the brewers were, um, proud of showcasing as well.

Overall: Very tasty and a great beer to sit back with on a warm day.  It drank like a NEIPA/Saison hybrid that captured the best and most distinct aspects of each.  Definitely one of the beer highlights of quarantine this far.  Grab one if you can!

Time for another spooky brew from my stash!  Bone Up Brewing emerged as one of our favorite local spots this summer so I always feel like I should give them some more love here.  Fortunately, this release (from a couple of months ago) was a shoo-in for my Halloween festivities!

Beer Name: Blood Built Stout

Brewery: Bone Up Brewing Company (Everett, MA)

Style: Dry Stout

ABV: 4.8%

Description: A birthday brew created by the Bone Up team, this beer was inspired by their love of the band Blood Built Empire (I’ll admit I’m not familiar with them).  You can more of the story here.

Appearance: Poured to a black body with a thin line of off-white foam.

Smell: Subtle mix of sweetness and lightly roast malt.

Taste: The taste was subtle and super smooth.  It opened with a creamy, light sweetness up front and closed with a subtle bit of light roasted coffee.

Mouthfeel: Light, slick body with very low carbonation.

Hype: None that I was aware of.

Overall: My wife and I both loved this!  It was really tasty and super easy to drink; a winner for sure.  I really hope this gets into at least somewhat regular rotation at the brewery.

In case you weren’t aware, June is Pride Month!  To help kick the festivities off in style, Everett’s Bone Up Brewing Company unveiled a new beer and merch this past weekend to help raise money for the folks at GLAD (GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders).

Beer Name: P.R.I.D.E.

Brewery: Bone Up Brewing Company (Everett, MA)

Style: Pale Ale

ABV: 4.6%

Description: A specially brewed pale ale featuring Pacifica, Rakau, Idaho 7, El Dorado, and Empire hops.  More specs here.

Appearance: Juice-like, orange and gold body with a thin layer of white foam across the top.

Smell: Light citrus and pale malts.

Taste: It had a smooth light orange, melon, and citrus rind sweetness that sat atop a subtle base of pale/biscuity malt.  There was a mild bitterness on the end with a touch more sweetness.

Mouthfeel: Soft, roughly medium body with fairly light carbonation.

Hype: As a testament to their belief in this cause, the brewery definitely made sure their social media followers knew this hitting the taps.  I don’t know about any additional hype necessarily, but people did seem pretty enthusiastic about this.

Overall: Fresh, easy drinking, and very refreshing.  It had a nice sweetness and mouthfeel that made it the perfect beer to sit outside with on a warm day.  Happy Pride you all!

Just a short train ride away from home and right down the street from my old haunts at Night Shift, is the site of Bone Up Brewing Company‘s taproom.  I’ve been meaning to check out this place ever since it opened up back in August 2016, but for a variety of reasons I never got around to it.  Luckily for me that finally changed this past weekend.

Bone Up is located in a modestly sized industrial building it shares with a CrossFit gym and a small restaurant.  The taproom is pretty cozy, especially in comparison to some of the others in the area, but they make good use of the space and have given it quite a lot of character.  Staring into the room, there is a bar counter to the right, a line of seven or so tables with chalkboard tops down the center of the room, and a small patio out front with a few extra seats.  The wall on the left side of the room is pure nostalgic gold. There’s Metallica pinball, a Ms. PacMan/Galaga arcade machine, and a couple of bookshelves packed full of old board games and irreverent 90s comics; a Farside collection and Tick graphic novel were two things in particular that caught my eye.  As an added bonus, the bartenders were all super friendly and their playlists offered up a steady supply of classic metal that perfectly matched the decor.

As for the beer they had maybe a dozen or so brews on tap, so I decided early on to resign myself to not being able to try them all.  With that in mind, I started my day off with a 4.8% Kentucky Common named Mr. Buttons in memory of a dog owned by one of the folks over at Valley Malt.  It wound up being an excellent brew to start my day off with after an extremely hot walk over from the train.  It drank nice and easy with a sweet malt base and lingering hints of rye and very lightly toasted malt. I paid a couple of extra dollars for the glass, because, well, I liked it and the proceeds from the sale went to benefit local shelter dogs.

Beer number two was another full pour and also my strongest offering of the day, a 7.4% double IPA named 4 Star Smoothie that was hopped with a “newish” variety called CrysCade.  It poured a glowing yellow/amber body and had a nice creamy orange taste upfront and a mild, hazy grapefruit bitterness lurking in the background with some light malt.  The finish was smooth with slight peppery notes and a lingering fruity aftertaste. A very nice take on the style.

Finally, in an effort to make the most of my time at the brewery, I decided to end my visit with a flight.  In an effort to be somewhat responsible about that decision, I filled said flight with some of the lightest offerings available.  Their flights are served up in muffin trays, cost $9, and come with four samples of whatever is on draft plus a complimentary snack from the dollar wall (I chose Cheez-Its).  I began with Wasted Life, a 6.4% IPA.  A nice blend of dank hops atop a fruity, bubblegum sweet base I’d definitely go back for a full pour of this.  Brew number two was Azacca, a blonde ale checking in at 4.4% and featuring a sweet honey malt base and refreshing blend of fruits.  Next I went with Key Lime, which was very aptly named and awesomely refreshing.  Nice and light at only 4.7%, this was another great beer for a hot day.  I gave this one a write-up when it first came out so you can check out my full notes here.  Closing out my day was Hillcrest, a 4.8% session brown ale with smooth grainy notes.

All in all, I had an excellent visit to the Bone Up Brewing Company taproom.  I really enjoyed the laid-back atmosphere and had a great time having some drinks while playing a few classic arcade in the process.  Make sure you give this place a visit if you are in the area!

I finally found a good time to open up that second growler from Bone Up Brewing Company I picked up the other day.  After really enjoying the first one last week, I was eager to taste what this one had to offer.

20160730_145001

Beer Name: Black Witow

Brewer: Bone Up Brewing Company

Style: Dark Wheat Ale

ABV: 4.7%

Description: The brewery’s take on a Belgian Wit, only made dark for, well, reasons.  You can read up on the brewer’s notes and thought process here.  For my side of this exchange, I opened up the sealed growler and poured myself a drink into a snifter glass.  As with the previous beer, the growler cost $8.49 (plus a $2.50 deposit) and was filled on 7/22.  I had my first taste of this beer a week later on 7/29.

Appearance: Poured a dark black body with just about a finger of tan, foamy head.  At a glance it was deceptively similar to many imperial stouts.

Smell: Smelled a touch wheaty with a hint of zesty citrus fruit.

Taste: Light and crisp, the beer featured toasted malts upfront before picking up some of the more expected characteristics of the style.  Following the initial taste came a blend of orange zest, mild herbs/spices, and a wheaty/yeasty presence that picked up some banana esters on the finish.  An intriguing and well-balanced blend of roasted malt and traditional wheat ale fixings.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a slightly more than moderate amount of bubbly carbonation.  Feels nothing like one might have expected based on appearances alone.

Hype Factor: No hype, just more curiosity.

Overall: I liked this beer, but wasn’t really blown away.  Perhaps I just don’t get overly excited by wheat ales.  It was definitely intriguing and different, but I can’t quite put my finger on whether or not they did that for some higher purpose or the sake of being gimmicky (see again their quirky descriptions).  Either way, based on my experiences with Black Witow and Key Lime White I would definitely try out more this brewery’s offerings, though preferably without having to acquire any additional growlers (I’ll have to look into that).  I’ll also keep an eye out for when their taproom opens so I can experience what they’re about firsthand.  So far, they definitely seem like another solid addition the local brewing scene on the north end of the Orange Line.

This time I am checking in with a session beer from yet another new brewery in my area, Bone Up Brewing Company.  They’re not quite ready to open their taproom to the public yet (it is located just down the street from Night Shift), but they recently started a limited distribution of their beer to various bars and stores in the area.  I had time to get over to the Medford Kappy’s the day after they got there most recent delivery, and I picked up two sealed growlers; one for now and one to check out in a few days.

20160724_194106

Beer Name: Key Lime White

Brewer: Bone Up Brewing Company

Style: White Ale with Fruit

ABV: 4.1%

Description: Described by the brewers in some detail here through a quirky anecdote, essentially this beer was inspired by key lime pie.  I kind of like the off-key descriptions the brewers give their beers (similar to Stone Brewing but without the direct aggression), though that sort of sassiness will only work in the long run if the beers back it up.  Speaking of, I poured this sample from a sealed 32 oz. growler into a snifter glass.  The growler was filled on 7/22 and I had my first taste on 7/24, so I definitely got to this while it was fresh.  Cost-wise the growler was a pretty reasonable $8.49 with $2.50 deposit on the glass I imagine I can recoup eventually when the taproom opens.

Appearance: The beer had a dark straw/light orangish body topped off with a fizzy white head that dissipated rather quickly down to nothing.

Smell: Citrusy sweetness backed up by a yeasty and bready aroma.

Taste: The beer started out dominated by tart citrus flavors and an aggressive lime zest.  The lime mellowed out a bit as the beer sat for a few minutes, which allowed a subtle bready malt and ever so slightly peppery yeast presence to emerge.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a lot of lively carbonation at the start which served to accentuate the tartness of the lime.  After sitting for a little bit, the carbonation simmered down giving the beer a slightly heavier creamy feeling.

Hype Factor: Curiosity is probably the better word here.  I was pretty excited to sample the wares of a new brewery that is setting up shop in my area.  Even more excited considering the offerings available fit into my session beer theme.

Overall: This was an interesting beer from which to get a first impression of a brewery, but it seems like this might be fairly representative of the brewer’s style.  I think they did a good job with this one and came pretty darn close to their target here.  The beer was very refreshing and definitely well-suited to drink in the hot summer weather.
