Beer, Beer Review, Brewery Visit, Massachusetts, Mayflower Brewing Company, New England

Another spot that we visited over the holiday weekend was Mayflower Brewing Company based out of Plymouth, MA.  A long-time favorite of mine, I have been interested in visiting their taproom for awhile now, but it never managed to work out the times we were in the area.  Seems like my luck in this regard finally changed!

The taproom is located in a commercial/industrial park a few exits north of the historic downtown part of Plymouth.  While the surrounding area might have been much to talk about (think sterile, corporate green space), the interior of the taproom was quite nice.  Bright and featuring walls of beautifully repurposed wood, it was split roughly in half between a more traditional bar and tap area and an additional seating section with long benches, extra seating, and space for playing various board games.

Upon arrival I was very happy to discover that they had a very full draft list going that day with more than a dozen beers pouring.  Unable to decide between revising some old favorites and trying out new things, my wife and I split a pair of flights to get a little bit of (almost) everything.  In the interest of time and space I’m not going to run through them all, but instead touch upon a few I found particularly noteworthy.

Ships & Salsa (Vienna Lager, 6.0%): Probably the biggest surprise of the day, this beer started us off on a very high note.  Brewed with flaked a maize and a “massive” amount of agave syrup, this beer had a nice malty sweetness accentuated by a very slight bit of citrus zest.  We imagined it pairing quite nicely with Mexican food

Waggle Dance (Farmhouse Ale, 6.0%): Brewed with wildflower honey, it had a sweet, light funkiness followed by a touch of peppery yeast and honey.  I really, really enjoyed this one.

Boomerang (Pale Ale, 6.0%): Featuring a light, clean malt base followed by a moderate amount of fruity Australian hops, this easy drinking pale ale was a refreshing treat on hot day.

Nitro Coffee Porter: Delivering that silky smooth nitro feel, this one had some excellent notes of rich malts, chocolate, and roasted coffee.  I couldn’t have asked for a better beer to end the tasting with.

As honorable mentions, past review beers X and Leather Bound Books were drinking as good as ever and definitely come recommend as well should you come across them.

At that is where I’ll wrap up our visit.  The beer was excellent, the bartender was super friendly, and the taproom itself was very nice, but I just couldn’t shake the feeling that they would benefit from a more interesting location (easier said than done I’m sure).  It is exciting to note, however, that they will be operating a beer garden in the nearby Pinehills community, effective May 30th, that looks like an amazingly beautiful spot.  Depending on our summer plans we may need to check that out as well!

Baltic Porter, Beer, Beer Review, Books, Craft Beer, Massachusetts, Mayflower Brewing Company, New England

As soon as I saw these cans posted by my local bottle shop I knew I had to review it.  I don’t often find brews that cross over into my love of books, so I am going to jump at them every chance I get.

Beer Name: Leather Bound Books

Brewery: Mayflower Brewing Company (Plymouth, MA)

Style: Baltic Porter

ABV: 8.0%

Description: There’s not much info to be had on this one, but I did find some details here.  It’s listed as a full bodied Baltic porter kept smooth by lager yeast and a long conditioning period.

Appearance: Dark cola-brown with reddish hints on the pour that transitioned to looking more or less black in the glass.  Wisps of off-white coating laced the top.

Smell: Notes of leather and dark malts.

Taste: It had a looming leather and tobacco-like presence presence throughout with notes of light roasted malts and toffee mixed in a various points along the way.

Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body with low carbonation.

Hype: At this point I am well aware the dangers of buying a beer on name along, but I’m always up for trying something from the folks at Mayflower.  They somehow fly under the radar locally despite consistently putting out some amazing brews.

Overall: I have to say the taste, in good way, very much delivered upon the name.  I enjoyed this brew even though it’s definitely a bit different than most of the beers I tend to gravitate towards.  An interesting evening sipper, try this out if you’re in the mood for something a bit different.

The more beers I gave from this brewery, the more and more I like them.  I’m just about at the point where I’m grabbing anything new these guys that I see.

Beer Name: 398

Brewery: Mayflower Brewing Company (Plymouth, MA)

Style: Double IPA

ABV: 8.0%

Description: Brewed to start a countdown towards the 400th anniversary of the founding of Plymouth, MA (coming up in 2020), this double IPA features a pale malt base and an abundance of Simcoe, Mosaic, and Nugget hops.  My can was about two weeks old when I opened it up.

Appearance: Cloudy golden/light copper body through which I could just barely make out my fingers on the other side of the glass.  Up top, a foamy white head formed with the pour.

Smell:  Sweet melon upfront paired with mild fruity hops.

Taste: It started out with a sweet, creamy blend of tangerine, orange, and melon coming out on top of the pale malt base.  The finish had a subdued grassy bitterness that blended into a mild layer of grapefruit and citrusy hops.

Mouthfeel: Creamy, just above medium body with a slightly less than moderate level of carbonation.

Hype: Despite the brewery being pretty well-regarded, this release did not come with any particular hype associated with it.

Overall: Really smooth and relaxing to drink, it offered a great combination of flavor and subtlety that I really enjoyed.  Do yourself a favor a grab a can (or four) of this next time you see it.

Beer, Beer Review, Craft Beer, Massachusetts, Mayflower Brewing Company, New England, Stout

I made it a mission of mine to make sure I got a chance to try this.  Though they don’t always generate the most hype in the Massachusetts brewing scene, Mayflower consistently puts out some amazing beer and I had to see what they did to celebrate a major anniversary.

Beer Name: X

Brewery: Mayflower Brewing Company (Plymouth, MA)

Style: Imperial Stout

ABV: 11.0%

Description: An Imperial Stout brewed in honor of Mayflower’s 10th anniversary.  Apparently it’s their largest beer brewed to date!

Appearance: Dark cola brown/black body topped by a thin tan head that cleared out very quickly after pour.

Smell: Creamy and sweet, with slight hints of roast and heat on the end.

Taste: Creamy sweetness upfront, with lots of dark malt and chocolate.  Stayed on the sweet side throughout but turned towards caramel and faint light roast coffee on the finish with some moderate heat mixed in.  Heat level slowly intensified as the beer sat.

Mouthfeel: Thick bodied with a minimal amount of carbonation.

Hype: This made the rounds on social media postings from various local bottle shops I follow, but overall the hype was low-key in the sense that I had no problem going out and picking this up.  That said, this brewery has a solid reputation with many Massachusetts beer drinkers and I jumped at the chance to try out their big anniversary offering.

Overall: An excellent straight up Imperial Stout and a very worthy anniversary release.  Definitely check this out if you come across it.

Beer, Beer Review, Craft Beer, Massachusetts, Mayflower Brewing Company, New England, Thanksgiving

As soon as I saw this I knew I had found the perfect beer for pairing with Thanksgiving dinner.  Based out of Plymouth, MA, Mayflower Brewing Company has been putting out some fantastic yet under the radar brews for nearly a decade now, giving me all the more reason to pick this up on sight.

img_20161124_224110138_hdr

Beer Name: Thanksgiving Ale

Brewer: Mayflower Brewing Company

Style: Old Ale/Strong Ale

ABV: 6.7%

Description: Part of the brewery’s limited release Cooper Series, this seasonal offering was brewed with “a rich array of barley and rye malts” before getting aged on toasted oak.  After I got this beer home, I noticed a stamp on the neck that said Gobble Til U Wobble 2015; apparently I picked up a vintage bottle without realizing.  Since it seemed like the kind of thing that would hold up well, I stayed optimistic.  I forget how much I paid, but I am almost certain the bomber was less than $10.

Appearance: The body had a brown/dark caramel color with reddish highlights if the light hit it just right.  A thick bubbly head formed with the pour and gradually settled down to a thin layer of off-white foam.

Smell: A swirling mixture of sweet, toasted, and grainy malts.

Taste: The beer started out with grainy malts which were quickly joined by a sweetness reminiscent of raisins, dark fruit, and caramel/toffee and backed up by a little kick of rye.  Towards the end of the sip there was a rum-like booziness that finished off with a distinct oak barrel presence.  When first poured I found the oak taste near the upper limits of my (admittedly low) preference zone, but as the beer warmed up it blended in really well with the other flavors, creating a delicious overall experience.  The alcohol was a bit noticeable, enough so that I would have believed someone if they said the beer was a percentage point or two higher.

Mouthfeel: Medium to thick bodied, the beer maintained a smooth and almost creamy feeling despite a rather moderate carbonation level.

Hype: Another beer I bought with only my own hopes and expectations in mind.  I probably wasn’t going to find a more thematically appropriate brew for the day, but having it comes from a local brewery with a great track record was icing on the cake.

Overall: An excellent beer to sip on after a hearty meal on a cold New England night.  I felt like this kept getting better the longer it sat in the glass, which was ideal since it wasn’t really the sort of thing you can drink quickly.  Don’t know what this year’s release is like, but this brew tasted great after one year in the bottle.  I also really enjoyed sitting down with a malt-forward offering after going on a bit of a hop spree the past month or so.  Definitely a nice change of pace.
