Welcome to day two of my Halloween celebration! Of course I’m going to be breaking out some seasonally appropriate beers for the occasion and this was the first of them. As soon as I saw the label pop up on the social media feed of one of my favorite local shops, I knew I had to get me a bottle.
Beer Name: Apocolocynposis
Brewery: Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales (Detroit, MA) / Monkish Brewing Company (Torrance, CA)
Style: Fruited Sour Ale / Saison
Description: Taking its name from the term used to describe the rather odd phobia of turning into a pumpkin at midnight, this beer was aged in oak barrels along with blackberry puree and limes. Read all about its backstory, and brewing specs, here on the Jolly Pumpkin website.
Appearance: Pink grapefruit colored body with wispy white lacing.
Smell: Slight citrus zest sweetness followed by a surge of tartness.
Taste: Not one for subtlety, the beer featured a heavy tart blackberry opening and closed with an equally strong hit of salted lime atop a dry layer of peppery and slightly funky yeast.
Mouthfeel: Overall rather light, but it had a thicker, syrupy feeling at the very end.
Hype: Slightly elevated I suppose since both breweries are rather popular.
Overall: This initially reminded me a lot of tequila, about which I have some mixed feelings, but on the whole I liked this. It was definitely more of a summer beer which suited me just fine since I happened to drink it on a rather warm day.
