American Fresh Brewhouse, Beer, Beer Review, Massachusetts, Slumbrew, Somerville Brewing Company, Summer

This past Friday my wife and I had plans to meet a friend of ours for dinner after work at Assembly Row. Arriving first, we made the executive decision to make Slumbrew Brewing Company’s American Fresh Brewhouse as our meeting place as it had something for everyone; namely outdoor seating, plenty of beer for the adults, and a children’s menu! Since I was on childcare duty that evening I didn’t exactly go crazy trying everything I had wanted to, but I did make my two beers count by revisiting an old favorite and trying out this delicious new to me summer brew.

Beer Name: Yellow Shark

Brewery: Somerville Brewing Company (Somerville, MA)

Style: Witbier

ABV: 4.3%

Description: Listed simply as a Belgian Witbier with notes of orange and citrus.

Appearance: On draft, it poured a light golden yellow with thin wisps of white foam on the edges of the glass.

Smell: Mild notes of coriander and spicy Belgian yeast.

Taste: It had a light, clean citrus taste upfront backed by coriander, banana esters, and the distinct presence of Belgian-style yeast. There was also a very little bit of pepper around the edges towards the end of the sip.

Mouthfeel: Slightly below medium bodied with moderate-plus carbonation.

Hype: None that I was aware of.

Overall: Really tasty and refreshing. This was an excellent beer for drinking outside in the summer, so I had it in exactly the right time and place. It was also pretty light which made it an excellent choice to go with dinner as well. Check this one out if you’re in the area!

Barack Obama, Beer, Beer Review, Craft Beer, Massachusetts, New England, Obama, Slumbrew, Somerville Brewing Company

I didn’t plan on posting this week on account of having just returned home from vacation, but a local event caught my attention.  From January 19-21, Somerville Brewing Company is serving up pints of their limited release #ThanksObama Nitro Stout and donating a portion of each sale to the Barack Obama Foundation.  Just their way of doing some good in the world and helping lift spirits in these troubling times.  The beer is available at both the main brewery and the taproom at Assembly Square.

Beer Name: #ThanksObama

Brewery: Somerville Brewing Company (Somerville, MA)

Style: Milk Stout (Nitro)

ABV: 5.5%

Description: A nitro milk stout brewed as a thank you to our former President.  Described by the brewers as creamy with hints of chocolate and coffee.  Available on draft at both Slumbrew locations for $8 per pint.

Appearance: Solid black body with a thick, foamy tan head.

Smell: Sweet cream and dark malts.

Taste: A clean, subtle blend of cream, lactose, and chocolate with a hint of lightly roasted coffee on the finish.

Mouthfeel: Super smooth and so light it almost felt like it was floating in my mouth.  Very minimal carbonation.

Hype: After spending a week in a fairly conservative part of central Florida, I was looking forward to this release.  It seems to have been well received in solidly Democratic Somerville as well (predictable Facebook trolls aside).

Overall: I really enjoyed this.  Featuring a superb mouthfeel and a subtly delicious flavor profile, this now ranks among my favorite examples of the style.  Go on and check this out while it’s available!  And, as the event declares, we miss you Barry!

American Fresh Beer Garden, Assembly Row, Beer, Beer Review, Craft Beer, Massachusetts, New England, Slumbrew, Somerville Brewing Company

I happened to be in Assembly Row last weekend and found myself having just enough time to make a stop at Slumbrew’s American Fresh Beer Garden.  The weather was warm and clear, meaning the tent was open to allow for maximum enjoyment of a beautiful day.  I had the Little Man with me for this adventure, but this spot is family-friendly during the daytime (a great decision given the location).  I got a beer and he got to dance to MC Hammer in his stroller.  Win/win right there.  An added benefit is that he almost makes up for my photography fail.

Beer Name: Heaven Scent

Brewery: Somerville Brewing Company (Somerville, MA)

Style: Sour Ale

ABV: 5.5%

Description: Five minutes of Googling didn’t turn up any additional info on this one, so I’ll just stick with the basic description of this being a sour ale brewed with passion fruit.  Cost was $7.50 per pour.

Appearance: Orange/amber body would have looked just about like a glass of juice if not for some wisps of thin white foam across the top.

Smell: Mellow tartness with a light funk in the background.

Taste: Super fruity and juicy!  Huge passion fruit presence throughout, sweet at the beginning turning to just a hint of tartness by the finish.  Extremely subtle bit of funk in there as well, the fruit was definitely the main component of this brew.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and low in carbonation, I noted a moderate level of that syrupy feeling I tend to get with this style ale.

Hype: None that I was aware of.  Slumbrew tends to fly below the radar in terms of beer hype.

Overall: Fruity and refreshing, this was an excellent choice for drinking outside on a hot day.  I was really into how the passion fruit took over the brew.  Had I not had my hands full with taking the baby and all his gear on the train, I would have picked up cans.  Check this one out if you’re into the style.

When I saw images of this pop up on social media around the holidays I made a mental note to pick some up.  It had been awhile since my last Slumbrew beer and this seasonally appropriate option looked like a good way to change that.  When I happened upon a four-pack while doing some other shopping it seemed like this was meant to be.

img_20161227_220702554_hdr

Beer Name: Snow Angel

Brewer: Somerville Brewing Company (Slumbrew)

Style: DIPA

ABV: 9.2%

Description: A limited seasonal release, this unfiltered DIPA makes use of both pilsner and caramel malts in combination with a healthy dose of Nugget, Columbus, Zythos, Simcoe, and experimental hops.  You can learn a bit more about the details at the bottom of this page.  If memory serves me correctly I picked up a four-pack of tallboys for roughly $13 downtown.

Appearance: Dark copper and amber body topped off by a thin layer of just slightly off-white foam.

Smell: Huge burst of tropical fruit sweetness when I initially opened the can.  After this passed, the beer took on more of a malty sweetness backed by a muted bitterness.

Taste: A lot of tropical and caramel sweetness upfront, but that abruptly fell off into a finish dominated by notes of herbal spices, toasted malt, and some resinous hops.  As the beer sat for a few minutes, the sweet malts began to stand out a bit more which I found preferable to the spices.  Considering all the hops that went into this I was a bit surprised they didn’t have more of a presences in this beer, either in flavor or bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a somewhat slick feeling underneath a moderate amount of carbonation.

Hype: No hype, I was just looking forward to getting re-acquainted with this brewery’s wares.  I am always tempted to more regularly try out more from them and used this release as an opportunity to do so.

Overall: I was a bit disappointed by this one.  It had a lot of promise coming out the gate, not to mention my beloved caramel malts, but ultimately it unraveled and ended up tasting a bit messy.  I feel like this would have been better labeled as a spiced strong ale as opposed to a DIPA (assuming the spice was intentional).  Considering all the great hop-forward options in my area, this was definitely a bit behind the pack.

A Few More Pumpkins

Assembly Row, Beer, Beer Review, Cape Ann Brewing Company, Massachusetts, Pumpkin Beer, Pumpkins, Slumbrew, Somerville Brewing Company

Hard to believe it is already mid-October!  Pumpkin beer season is probably now at its height, so it seem to be an appropriate time to report in on two more.  Unlike the other reviews so far, these beers were not tasted blindly.  One was ordered while out running some errands and the other was a long-standing favorite that I just couldn’t pulling out of the fridge.  So, without further ado, here are the latest two entries into my pumpkin patch.

The first beer to report on this time around is Slumkin Pumpkin, by Slumbrew Brewing Company.  We happened to be in Assembly Row running an errand the other and my wife suggested we stop by the American Fresh Taproom to grab a beverage before heading home.  I hadn’t been there in a while so I wasn’t about to pass this up.  They seemed to have a good number of beers pouring that particular night, but sitting prominently among the beers I hadn’t tried before was a pumpkin beer.  I felt committed at this point, so the pumpkin beer it was.  Happily, it was pretty good.  Checking in at 6.5%, it poured with a typical orangish copper body and a foamy white head.  The smell hinted at a promising vegetal sweet taste profile, something that has done well for me so far.  The taste did follow-up on this and was overall pretty smooth with vegetal pumpkin tastes upfront, a transition to sweet malts and finally a vanilla/pumpkin spice finish.  What made this beer so good for me was that the spice finish wasn’t overdone, though it did build up a bit as the beer went on.  The mouthfeel was pleasingly thick and creamy and brought to mind thoughts of pumpkin pie.  One of the better pumpkin beers I’ve had this season.

20151013_182900The second beer I have to report on was last year’s co-favorite, Cape Ann Brewing Company’s big 11.0% Imperial Pumpkin Stout.  This one is completely different from any of the others I’ve listed on here so far.  It poured dark and black, though I couldn’t coax any more than a thin fizzy head out of it.  The smell is vegetal and sweet, mixed with just a bit of alcohol as the beer warms.  The taste, though, is where the beer really starts to impress.  Upfront is strongly vegetal pumpkin.  The pumpkin remains throughout the beer, though it transitions to a more of sweet pumpkin syrup-like taste by the end.  The pumpkin combines with both sweet and lightly roasted malts and comes to a somewhat boozy finish.  There was not much in the way of spice in this beer and that suited me just fine.  Mouthfeel was thick and creamy and rather low carbed, excellent for the big tastes and style.  Once again, I found this to be a fantastic beer it remains at the top of my list.  It is a good beer period, not just for a pumpkin offering.  It is also now sold in 4 packs of 16 ounce cans which makes it an even nicer pick up for when a bomber is just a bit more than you are looking for.  Highest recommendations for this one.

The American Fresh Taproom at Assembly Row

American Fresh Taproom, Assembly Row, Assembly Square, Beer, Beer Review, Slumbrew, Somerville Brewing Company

For today’s review I’ll be looking at a place that I’ve been looking forward to for awhile, Slumbrew’s American Fresh Taproom at Assembly Row in Somerville, MA. So far I’ve hit it up on two occasions, the first on Sunday, November 22, which was at the end of its opening week and the second on Black Friday, November 28 as something to do before seeing a movie.

Location: For me, getting there was as easy as jumping on the Orange Line subway to the new Assembly Square stop and taking a brief walk. The taproom is set up as an outdoor beer garden and since this is Boston in November what that means in practice is a heated tent. It’s about a block away from all the shopping amenities of Assembly Row and is a great place to stop before seeing a movie as the beer selection and prices easily beat the theater bar (no to-go cups though).

The Decor: Walking into the tent takes you out of the parking lot and storefronts and into the world of Slumbrew. Banners of their bottle label art are hanging overhead and plastic utensils , and napkins on each table are tucked snuggly inside their empty six pack boxes. For seating they have an open area with about a dozen or so tables set up. The tables typically seat two to four and are colorful folding chairs paired with basic tables. A few additional taller tables are at the edge of the floor for standing. There are also two small shops inside. The first is located opposite the entrance and sells some local foodstuffs like taza chocolate, local nuts, and jars of Fluffernutter that are also on the menu. The second is immediately to the left of the entrance and has Slumbrew merch, mostly shirts and glassware. Two spacious and very clean bathrooms are located between the two shops.

To the right of the entrance and across from the seating area is where the magic happens. The day’s offerings are listed on two large chalkboards, one for food and one for the tap list. The set up is vaguely reminiscent of a cafeteria system. Mixed food and beer orders are done on the left and the beer-only line forms down at the other end of the counter where there are also a few stools set up at a counter and more standing room space as well. Seemed like a pretty efficient system when I was there.

The Visit: My first visit was around 1:00 PM on the Sunday at the of their opening week which unfortunately for me meant that about half the beers (including the three I was most excited about – Yankee Swap 2013 & 2104 and Lobstah Killah) were kicked and one or two things on the menu weren’t available either. Slightly disappointing for sure but it’s a good sign for them that they got that much interest so quickly. I shook this off and ordered the Assembly Row Pale Ale and the daily charcuterie plate. The Pale Ale (review below) was fantastic and the charcuterie plate was a nice companion to my beers offering smoked chorizo, prosciutto, blue cheese crumbles, apple bread, mango cashews, and taza chocolate – all locally sourced. Everything on the plate was good; I personally could have done with a touch more chorizo but really when can’t you say that?

20141123_123249

Dessert was the taza chocolates from the plate with a Porter Square Porter to wash them down, which made for an excellent pairing. All told the two beers and food cost me about $26 ($13 for the food and roughly $6.50 per beer) which considering the proximity to Boston and the upscale shopping at Assembly Row isn’t too bad, especially for the beers.

My second visit was in the early evening on Black Friday, around 5:00 or 6:00 PM. No shopping for me, just stopping in to kill some time and grab a few drinks before meeting my wife after work for a movie. The taps were fully stocked this time (sans the 2013 Yankee Swap) and I got a hold of the Lobstah Killah and 2014 Yankee Swap that escaped me on my previous visit. Only had drinks this time out and both tasted great. It was a pretty chilly evening but the temperature inside the tent I found quite comfortable and well maintained which is a definite plus.

The Ambiance: Between the tent, the colorful seating arrangements, overhead banners, and cafeteria feel of the ordering counter the place had kind of a funky makeshift vibe going on that was fun. Lots of good energy going on there and the staff was friendly and helpful as they all seemed to really enjoy what they were doing. Apparently the kitchen smoke alarm is located in a less than ideal position so whenever it goes off there is a rousing round of cheer and applause. The background music was a good mix that contributed to the good times and it was never inappropriately loud or dominating. No TVs here which I think was an excellent call. For people like me in there solo, cell data reception was working just fine – no problems with those Untappd check-ins here!

The clientele here is primarily younger professionals (think mid 20s through early 40s) though there were definite differences between my two visits. During my first visit, the place was probably half full with young families and their children probably taking a shopping break or on the way to or from Lego Land. That did make me feel a bit out of place coming for a few drinks on a Sunday afternoon since it wasn’t quite what I was expecting, but I’m pretty sure that was all in my head, as obviously no one minded. Maybe I’m just a bit jealous that all the kids got Slumbrew Frisbees AND the chance to go to Lego store, but I digress.

The second visit brought me into a pretty full house. Approximately the same age range of people minus the kids. I can’t deny that there was a slightly hipster vibe on both trips but overall the people in there all seemed to be in good spirits and enjoying the beers.

Impression: I know I’ll gladly end up here again but am not quite ready yet to make it into a regular stop the way Night Shift has become until the plans to expand the offerings and onsite brewing pan out. A few things I would like to see happen:

  1. Growlers – These will be available eventually pending license from the state
  2. Sample Flights – For those of us that can’t make up our minds
  3. Online updates about the menu and tap list

That said, I’m a fan of Slumbrew and think it’s really awesome that they finally got this opened up and seem to have wasted no time getting noticed. On Friday night I took a quick walk a few blocks around the taproom and this was easily the busiest bar/eatery I saw. The place feels very accessible and neighborly. I’m definitely going to keep an eye on this place. For an example of why, let’s take a look at two of the beers that really caught my attention.

Beer: Assembly Row Pale Ale

Brewery: Somerville Brewing Company (Slumbrew)

Style: Pale Ale

ABV: 9.2%

Description: New hoppy pale ale named for the new taproom.

Pour Info: On tap poured into a 12 oz. plastic cup.

Appearance: Pours a light golden amber with a fluffy white head.

Smell: Smell is slightly sweet with fresh hops.

Taste: Follows the hoppy sweetness of the smell. The sweet is more upfront followed by a nice blast of hops midway through to the finish. No hint of being 9%.

Mouth Feel: Thin side of medium with good carbonation.

Hype Factor: I had been a little disappointed that my first choice of beers were kicked, but this one was good enough to make up for that and then some.

Overall: This beer was quite good and I had to do a double take upon trying it to confirm that it really was 9.2% (though by the end I was slightly aware). Undoubtedly, I would stop in for one of these again. Would be fantastic if this turns out to be the house beer year-round.

20141123_123031

Beer: 2014 Yankee Swap

Brewery: Somerville Brewing Company (Slumbrew)

Style: Imperial Stout

ABV: 12.0%

Description: Second edition of their big winter stout series. This one was aged in Turkey Shore Distillery rum barrels.

Pour Info: 8 oz. pour from tap line into plastic cup.

Appearance: Dark and black with a thick tan head that had to be partially poured off on the fill. The head takes a few seconds before setting up to the top.

Smell: Rum/oak barrel and sweetness.

Taste: Very mellow considering how big this beer is. Has a slight molasses like sweetness and some oaky notes from the barrel. The rum is there in the background from start to finish and comes out more as the beer warms. These three tastes balance together quite well and in a very drinkable way.

Mouth Feel: Thick and creamy but very smooth going down.

Hype Factor: It eluded me once so I wasn’t about to pass it up when I saw it.

Overall: Really liked this though the 8 oz. pour was the perfect amount for me. Very smooth and enjoyable to drink. I’d get this again if I see it available.
